Other than the troubling truth that when put to the test even the best of political systems offer at most only token resistance to our warts-and-all world's relentless unrepentant thrust to corrupt and pervert virtuous intent what on earth could democracy possibly represent? And who but the sitting-pretty upper-crust order-giving respectably reprobate power-hustling money-rustling class and the deep state's fist-of-fate psychopathic puppet-master brass does it almost inevitably eventually represent? And always at who but John and Jane Q.'s perpetual expense?

I wish I could share your hope/optimism, but the system would also appear to be entirely broken. I've always wished my cynicism would be proven unjustified/wrong, but sadly, not only has it invariably proven to be right and justified, but the unfolding of events has always shown it to have, if anything, underestimated the direness of reality.

The system makes no room for those unwilling to play The Game, weeding out those too principled to play it. The desire to fit in, to gain approval/acceptance is such a basic human driver, that only the most upright can withstand its siren call. The result being the typically debased human that thrives in such toxic atmospheres.
The honest are either chased away, or exit the scene voluntarily to preserve their honour and sanity.
