"Unable to swallow their pride

and doped up sky-high on uncut cope

and the often more-potent-still drug of denial"

-- what a great summary of that familiar condition

A barb is a nice image for the way people can't go back. My neighbor is a 70+ lesbian who worked in public health (professor at Vassar) and who invested a lot in the civil rights movement and the AIDS crisis. She cannot imagine that the Democratic party has betrayed her and no longer stands for any of the values she held when she was young and hopeful. It's interesting to see her squirm when confronted with Palestine or the fact that public health now equals big pharma. She gets angry and, to go with your metaphor, works the barb in deeper.

I wonder if there is a literal solution to this problem that aligns with the metaphor. As my dad taught me while fishing, you have to push the hook further until it comes through the fish's face in order to get it out.

Maybe not. Her wife died "suddenly" from the shot, which makes it even harder to admit she has been wrong.
